D3.js is not a library of ready-made charts but a JavaScript toolkit: the data join binds each SVG, Canvas or HTML element to a datum, and modules for scales, axes, shapes, geographic projections, layouts (force, hierarchies, treemaps) and transitions compose the rendering. Every pixel is under your control, at the cost of more code. It's our choice when the visualization is the product itself and no standard chart will do.
